Mental Health America of Roanoke Valley has supported members of the Roanoke Valley for over seventy years. Through education, advocacy, and direct community service our organization help to bring stability to families across our area. For organizations large and small, the adverse effects of mental health crisis can be felt. For example, the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry finds that clinical depression is one of America’s most costly illnesses, as when left untreated depression is as costly as heart disease or AIDS to the U.S. economy. It can cost over $51 billion in absenteeism from work and lost productivity, and $26 billion in direct treatment costs. Further, depression tends to affect people in their prime working years and can last their full lifetime if left treated. Yet, there is hope as more than 80 percent of people with clinical depression can be successfully treated.
Mental Health America of Roanoke Valley works with clients through our Roanoke Valley Mental Health Care Collaborative Free Clinic, including working clients who are suffering from depression and anxiety. Further, we provide education for parents raising children with mental health care needs and a weekly trauma-informed after-school program for children impacted by the trauma of domestic violence. We engage our older Americans during Senior Extravaganza and our semi-annual Caregiver College, and we educate the community through leading Mental Health First Aid workshops and our Crisis Intervention Team Training program for local law enforcement. Specialty events are held focusing on refugee and immigrant mental health, as well as on mental health advocacy throughout the year.
