Promoting Mental Health For All In The Valley

Dear friend of Mental Health America of Roanoke Valley:

The past several years have seen significant changes in the funding environment for Mental Health America of Roanoke Valley (MHARV).  Over the past two years, MHARV staff and board have worked tirelessly to find alternative funding scenarios or solutions to support the important programs that MHARV provides to the Roanoke Valley community. Unfortunately, adequate ongoing and reliable sources of funding to support the organization’s ongoing operations and expenses have not been found during this time.  We sincerely commend our current Executive Director, Annie Harvey, and her staff for their unwavering commitment to seeking out ongoing support for MHARV and its important programs. As a result, and with deep sadness, the Board of Directors and Executive Director of MHARV announce that the organization is in the process of winding down operations. The last day of operation for MHARV is scheduled for October 31 , 2019.

While this is a very difficult step for all of us who care deeply about the tremendous legacy of excellent work and advocacy provided by MHARV of Roanoke Valley for the past 70 plus years, we trust that these key programs are placed in good hands for the future.   We deeply appreciate the Roanoke Valley community’s tremendous support over the years and trust that the spirit of MHARV will live on in the hearts and minds of all of our community partners. We trust that our MHARV partners and supporters will continue to carry, well into the future, the MHARV legacy of advocacy for adults and children whose lives are affected by mental health disorders.

Our Board of Directors and staff announce that Mental Health America of Roanoke Valley (MHARV) is partnering with Bradley Free Clinic and Blue Ridge Behavioral Health beginning on November 1. Collaborating with these two stellar community partner organizations is a wonderful opportunity for our clients and our community.

The Roanoke Valley Mental Health Care Collaborative, the only free psychiatric clinic in the state of Virginia, will be managed going forward by Bradley Free Clinic. The Bradley Free Clinic’s mission to provide those in need with comprehensive, free-of-charge health care administered by volunteer medical professionals is akin to what MHARV does via the Collaborative. It is the most qualified organization in the Valley to manage the Collaborative. We are proud that the only free mental health clinic in the state will be added to the services offered by Bradley. Bradley is also poised to help the Collaborative to expand. Currently the Collaborative serves 150 patients.

Crisis Intervention Training (“CIT”) is an innovate first-responder model of police-based crisis intervention training to help persons with mental disorders and/or addictions access medical treatment rather than place them in the criminal justice system due to illness related behaviors. It also promotes officer safety and the safety of the individual in crisis.  The CIT will be managed as of November 1 by Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare (BRBH), the Community Services Board serving adults, children, and families with mental health concerns, development disabilities, or substance abuse disorders in the Roanoke Valley. BRBH is the most qualified organization to continue this vital training for local law enforcement on how to de-escalate a situation involving an individual in mental health crisis.
